Community Service Hours
As stated in the St. Augustine
High School handbook, service hours are intended “To inculcate in
the student a Christian sense of responsibility, a true
understanding of freedom, a dedication to peace and justice, an
awareness of the needs of others, a respect for one another, a
reverence for life and an intimacy with God."
We have a commitment to developing our students spiritually,
physically and mentally. In order to foster a sense of
responsibility to others, students are required to perform 40 hours
of community service each year, 20 hours per semester. No
more than five of these hours can be satisfied by work done at St.
Augustine High
School.
Approved Service Hour locations and sponsors can
be found on the school’s website. All locations must be approved
beforehand by the Campus Minister. Service hours performed at a
non-approved location will not be counted.
If you wish to submit a new site for approval, it must be a place
where any of our students are able to perform service. Approval of
new sites is left to the discretion of the principal.
Service Hours are
to be reported on the letterhead of the organization where the
service is performed. The on-site supervisor should indicate the
number of hours performed and sign the form.
Community Service must be completed by the end of the 2nd Quarter
for the first 20 hours and the 4th Quarter
marking period for the remaining 20 hours, otherwise they will
receive a failing grade in Theology, whereupon they will attend
summer school and complete their service hours. A form will be
provided to verify that service hours have actually been completed.
Service hours cannot be satisfied by assisting
relatives and friends in commercial enterprises, nor can they be
fulfilled by doing ordinary household chores and performing in
organizations such as choirs, community theaters, etc.
Service Hours are due by 3 pm on Monday, December 7, 2009.
